Li-ion battery safety

Most experts agree that we should not be worried about li-ion battery safety. The recall of 6 million Sony batteries was triggered by a failure rate of one in 200 000. But some commentators believe that we'll risk almost anything in our thirst for more 'juice' in our mobile devices.

Mobile phones now act as diaries, cameras, videos, even games consoles! Now, if they could make a decent cup of tea, then we'd be talking... Copyright: John Lee, from stock.xchng.

What can your mobile phone do? The one on the desk in front of me has the following functions:

* Messaging, of course, but in multimedia and Flash as well as text
* Addressbook including speed-dialling
* Different tone and display settings
* Recordings, tones and graphics gallery
* Voice recording
* Push-to-talk
* Organiser, including alarm, calendar and to-do list
* Games, calculator, stopwatch and countdown timer
* Web access through GPRS

How many of these functions will lie dormant over the phone's life is anyone's guess, but phone manufacturers believe we demand them. Use any of them for a long while - a long call, for instance; or a protracted games session - and the battery will run down frighteningly fast.

The widespread nature of li-ion batteries in mobile phones, digital cameras, laptops and other devices, makes concerns over safety a very hot topic. Battery experts suggest that around two billion li-ion cells are produced every year. Manufacturers such as Sony act fast to reassure consumers and protect their brand image. The battery recalls this year are part of that effort.

Nokia 6650 Fold Mobile Phone

Nokia 6650 Fold Clamshell Mobile Phone transcends Nokia 6600 Fold Mobile Phone with a number off additions like a GPS receiver, a USB modem and extended battery life. This mobile phone, being a budget device does not carry much support for its imaging sector. To be more precise, it limits its support here with a 2MP digital camera, as 6600 Fold sported a 3.2MP version. However, definitely the music lover has something in 6650 Fold, say a Real Player along with the conventional MP3 player. While the Real Player plays back video, the music player of this mobile phone promptly reads WMA, AAC and MP3 formats. An FM radio is also a decent provision here. Something that strives to compliment these remarkable music players are; a decent set of headphones (stereo), though the connection refers to a 2.5mm socket.

6650 Fold also has a better network enhancer than 6600 Fold’s GPRS and WCDMA. Here 6650 Fold presents HSDPA feature that clocks the speed of 3.6 Mbps, apart from a USB modem that entitles the user to plug a laptop to this mobile phone, and enjoy fast internet connection through the 3G network of T-Mobile. A Flash player is also served in the provision’s list, for this mobile phone being very much a 3G smartphone. Another attraction of this mobile phone is an in built GPS receiver that comes with a user-friendly package of 6 month voice guidance, though a Web’n'Walk calling plan is required to enjoy this package. Further, Bluetooth and USB connectivity are offered here. Memory of this mobile phone can be expanded using its memory expansion slot that suits a microSD card.

Motorola Tundra VA76r Mobile Phone

Motorola Tundra Clamshell Mobile Phone definitely would fit under the tough-phone category, as does JCB Tough Mobile Phone. This mobile phone, then is a technological gizmo as well, with 3.5G connectivity, Bluetooth, GPS, memory expansion slot and a 2MP digital camera on its list of provisions. This mobile phone is rugged enough for the miltary to use it on the fields, as it complies with MIL-STD-810 standards of the US. Motorola also avers that this phone can survive odd conditions marked by heat, shocks, humidity, splashes and cold. This clamshell mobile phone, coming in a tough casing is well designed too, though some might find its external antenna a bit annoying.

This quad band GSM mobile phone comes with a couple of UMTS bands as well that help it function in Europe too. The communication data download features of this mobile phone include HSDPA, UMTS, EDGE and GPRS. Bluetooth points to the wireless connectivity part of this mobile phone. GPS service is available in this mobile phone through a dedicated A-GPS receiver that enhances navigation. Although, this device does not feature a large in built memory, the microSD memory expansion slot alloted here more than compensates this drawback.

Motorola Tundra VA76r 3G Mobile Phone that comes with a 2MP built-in digital camera, is provided with a good LCD of 2.2” diagonal size. The display resolution of this device is 240 x 320 pixels. A media player is also provided in this mobile phone that realises a number of audio and video files. The web browser of this mobile phone promptly compliments the push-to-talk support and the e-mail client of this mobile phone. The talktime offered by this mobile phone is 5 hours and the standby offered here is 20 hours.

The 2.8” TFT colour display of this mobile phone has a resolution of 640 × 480 pixels. Input can be given either using the finger-tip or a stylus. The device measures 106mm by 61mm by 17mm and weighs 147 grams. There is a 3.0 Megapixels camera with auto-focus feature, integrated into this phone.
